Temperature definitely makes a difference on my basses, and on the gut string bass, humidity takes some of the snap out of the strings. I have to watch the bridge on the basses as well, because constant tuning tends to pull the bridge up and change the action and tension. It’s a good idea to check the intonation(octave harmonic) with a tuner occasionally to make sure the bridge is where it’s supposed to be.
Kevin do you have any more info/tips on how to do that? I know how to set the intonation on electric but no idea on upright as theirs no frets so no idea where the octave should be. I was always wondering how to tell if you have the bridge in the right spot, other than putting it between the notches of the f-holes which doesnt always seem to be easy to tell if its right.

I actually do have one of those, I just checked what they were, I bought one off of ebay for like 10 bucks before. With a preamp it sounded a bit better, definitly needed the preamp but still sounded pretty crappy but couldnt really complain for 10 bucks.

You may want to hit up a music store and try out a Behringer BDI21, They are like 30 or 35 bucks canadian when I got mine like 2 weeks ago or so and makes a huge difference. Most music stores will return stuff like that within 30 days so if you dont notice an improvement you can just take it back.

That will match up the impedence from your pickup to your amp and gives you some controls for the sound as well.

I am using a fishman bp100 right now and even with the preamp I am having problems with tinny/treble sound, cant wait to try out an underwood that someone sent me.

Also make sure that six rounds one is really tight in the wing of the bridge, I started to get a bit better sound out of it when I put a little shim in there to make it fit a lot tighter.

I had that problem alot with a different pickup, I dont know how good the one you have is I am sure others will respond with something about the pickup type but have you tried with a pre amp at all?

I had a lot of issues where it sounded really tinny and crappy in general no matter where I placed my pickup. Ended up being an impedence mismatch between my amp and pickup, once I added a preamp it sounded way better (but still pretty shitty as it was a crappy pickup).
I use Thomastik Spirocore Orchestra strings for almosr 20 years now. Those are Medium tension, not Light.

The bass is just cheap Chinese bass that I bought straight from the factory. I moved the bridge and soundpost a little bit, put new strings and that’s it. It has never been to luthier and I still use it for almost all my US shows, which is about 200 or so per year, recorded 5 albums with it etc.

    Hope this helps!
Thanks, wow 200 shows a year, thats nuts. Im lucky if I play more than twice a month.

You, sir, are a gentleman & a scholar. Thank you. :cheer:
Yeah I had no idea it was there for the longest time either. Maybe it wasnt in older versions because I am sure I have looked for it before but couldnt find it anywhere.
Guitarpro sounds interesting too. I’ve never learned notes, but I’d really like to! Feel like an illiterate sometimes.

My cousin Kenneth (great drummer) once asked Trevor Dunn (Fantômas, Mr. Bungle etc.) what the most advanced bass line he’d ever played was. He started giggling, grabbed a napkin, and started writing down the notes. My cousin, a little embarrassed, had to admit he had no clue what it said, whereby Mr. Dunn replied: “Hah! Hummers! They just hum the melodies and somebody else has to write it down for them”. :P
I never did until recently either, its way easier than I thought it was to get started.

http://www.studybass.com is a really good site I find to learn from. Depending what you do for work if you have downtime and nothing to do on occasion I would find sheet music of something (I have been using the simandl book as well as Building walking basslines by ed friedland) and writing out the music into tab on a sheet of paper. After a while I could start to just look at a sheet and be like thats a B on the G string, thats a C on the A string, etc.

Took a while though and im still slow at it but its getting faster.

Guitarpro is a decent tool to start with, the problem is that you are always stuck with the tab. I wish there was a way to hide the tab. Learning to read music is an essential discipline to learn in order to be a good musician. See if you can get your mitts on at least a beginning bass book by Mel Bay to learn the notes.
Click on the ‘View’ menu, click ‘Hide Tablature’. Done. Thats what I have been doing lately, I write in the simandl exercises using tab, then hide the tab so I only see the music and try to play along at slow tempos to learn to sight read while doing the exercise.

You know I never actually thought of that one on upright, I always play it jamming electric, same with some gg covers. Ill have to try that one out. Bloodshed would be fun too. or some agent orange. Thumbs up for punkabilly
I’ve been working on playing along with Municipal Waste hahaha. It actually sounds pretty good once the rythm is down, which is a mess of triple and single slaps. Thrashabilly here we come.
Nice, UK Subs are pretty fun to slap to as well, the riff from warhead has been one of my warmup riffs for a while now.
